We live in an increasingly divided world, beset by challenges such as inequality, climate change and intolerance. At the same time, our information about the world is at once proliferating and shrinking. We are bombarded with information in the form of Tiktok videos and social media posts where the least nuanced views are often amplified loudest. We increasingly turn to Generative AI for information, which tells us the statistically most probable answer to our questions. Anthropology offers something else. Anthropologists thrive on long-term engagement with the questions and communities they are concerned with. They do not start with pre-determined hypotheses, but rather wait for surprises to emerge. Often, as a result, they challenge established ideas and worldviews. They take others, and other ways of life seriously, and aim to understand the world from the perspective of people very unlike themselves. We feel that this perspective is particularly important at the current moment, and this podcast seeks to give an anthropological take on the issues of the day.
